After returning to Kanin, Jane accepts her place as his wife. For the first time she is truly happy. Everything seems to be perfect, but her concerns over Sophie and Sophie’s affair with Julian continue to haunt her.

When Julian suffers a heart attack, Jane’s perfect world begins to unravel. Jane also fears the trip planned in her honor where she is to be “introduced” into the vampire world. Kanin assures her this has been done many times before and will not pose a problem, but when something goes wrong at the Parisian vampires chateau, Jane finds herself at the mercy of the vampires.

Kanin lowered his hand away from her. There was sorrow in his eyes. He stood frozen in place as his eyes turned black. With a deliberate and slow motion he raised his hand, and begin to whisper in a foreign tongue. Jane shivered. She closed her eyes not sure what he was going to do. Little pants escaped her mouth. She jolted at the slightest touch of his thumb on the skin between her eyes. He whispered long, airy words. Soon Jane felt relaxed. She breathed deeply. She was no longer sad or worried. The claustrophobia she felt before was draining. The last thing she felt was him lift her off the ground before the blackness hit.
